Open air museum Čičmany Date Added: Tuesday 19 February, 2008 Photographer: Zuzana Chytilová
Description: Čičmany is a village and municipality in Žilina District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia. It is known as the first folk architecture reserve in the world (founded in 1977).
The authors of white ornaments, as rule, were women who originally adorned only the corners of houses first with mud and later with lime. However, since the 19th century the motifs were added and painted all over exteriors of not plastered log houses. The painting was intended to protect the logs against the effect of sunrays. Geometrical ornamentation was also used in embroidery applied to garments, pictures or tablecloths. The Reserve counts 136 houses.
Čičmany is precious evidence of Slovakia’s efforts to renew, protect and present traditional folk architecture and is well worth a visit. |

Geyser Herľany Date Added: Sunday 20 August, 2006 Photographer: Peter Lovás
Description: North east of Košice, 28 away in the picturesque country of the lower slopes of the Slanské vrchy / solt Hills ) lies the village of Herľany, whose territory includes the smaller village Žiarovce. According to the latest data ( 2004 ) the village 280 inhabitants. Nerby mineral springs led to the estabilishment in the 18th century of spa for treament of stomach and bowel complaints, and gynecological and rheumatoid illesses.
When the natural springs could no longer meet the spa treatment needs, in 1870 a deeper bore-hole was drilled, which resulted in today´s worldwide singularity – the Herľany geyser. This one differs from classic geysers in that it was aritificaly activated by drilling ( to a depon of 404,5 metres ) , and it is producted by cold water at a temperature 16 – 20 ° C.
The first eruptions were very strong, reaching heights of up to 112 m a lasting continously for ten days. After that the eruption intervals lasted to 8 – 9 hours, and later 180- 20 hours. These days the eruptions recur every 32 – 36 hours, and the water jets up to 15 – 20 metres for about 30 minutes. The eruptions are caused by carbon dioxide gas pressure which builds up above the water in an underground chamber, fotcing the water up on the arlesian well principle. |
